Our Process
How an emergency call runs in Rosemead: the call, the shut-off, the plumber, the written quote and the fix.
From Your Call to a Fixed System
The service call and the hourly, separately — and what the difference between a wage and a rate pays for.
Call, and get two numbers, not one
The service call and the hourly, stated separately, before anybody sets out. A single figure quoted over the phone is either a guess or a minimum, and you are entitled to know which.
Ask whether regular hours would do
For most of what comes in, they would, at a third to a half less. We would rather book you for the morning than charge the premium for a job that did not need it.
Shut-off first, always
Before anybody drives anywhere. The main shut-off for the property, or the valve under the fixture, and the electricity if water is near it. That advice is free, and it does more for your bill than our arrival does.
Then the two jobs, priced separately
Stopping it and fixing it properly are different work at different prices, and the permanent half sometimes needs a permit. Both are written down before either happens.
A wage and a charge-out rate are two different numbers
Most confusion about what a plumbing bill should be comes from treating them as one.
What prevailing wage actually is
A public-works figure. California's Department of Industrial Relations issues a determination per county and per craft for state-funded construction. It has no application to work on your house.
Why it is still worth knowing about
It is public and unusually specific: a base hourly rate plus the fringe on top — health, pension, training, vacation. That makes it the clearest public statement of what an hour of this trade costs an employer. Look up the current Los Angeles County figure on the DIR's own site; we deliberately do not quote it here, because it changes and a stale number would be worse than none.
What the gap pays for
Not margin. The van, the fuel, the tools, state licensing, and every unbilled hour spent driving between jobs and answering the phone.
So compare quotes, not wages
Ask each one the same two questions — what is included, and what is extra — and then check the single line on any quote you can verify for free: the C-36 number, against the board's own public register.
The first real rain is when a line that was merely slow stops
A sewer lateral can run at reduced capacity for a long time without anybody noticing — cast iron closing inward under the post-war streets, or roots working into a joint under the older ones. Then the first sustained rain arrives, groundwater raises the load on the line, and a drain that had merely been slow stops altogether. Across whole streets in the same week, because the whole street was plumbed in the same year.
Which makes the cheap version of this a scheduled problem rather than an emergency, and it is the clearest case on this site for the argument the rest of it makes: the hour you call is the part of the price you control. September in standard hours is a fraction of nine on a wet Sunday, for exactly the same work.
- The service call and the hourly, stated separately and up front
- Told when standard hours would do the same job for less
- Free methods explained before a visit is booked
- A C-36 number you can verify before anybody arrives
